My friends a BrickToYaFace.com are becoming masters at creating spaces for independent artists to manifest their ideas. They do it virtually via their website, and they do it physically at the Inland Empire’s epicenter for all things hip hop: It’s The Common Ground. When I started going to The Vibe every other Sunday for CG, I think M-16 and Ramone Jones were the hosts…comedy and bars. I remember when Curtiss started hosting and how it seemed like talking to the audience opened up and advanced his stage performance. I’ve learned a lot about the city I live in just by showing up to The Common Ground and paying attention. I respect CG for upholding its namesake, and providing a central space for artists of all types and in various stages of the industry (including sneaking around it), with a real place to touch, smell and see each other. I see Cam Archer hosting now and I’m secure that The Common Ground will continue to nurture artists in whichever form it takes in the future–passing the torch keeps the fire from burning out.
I love you Lesa, I love you Noa…now here’s the fuckin’ pictures!
